Psychiatric Medical Diagnosis: Manic Depression (Bi-Polar Disorder) by Sandy L. Crowther CVA
Note: This (formerly) unpublished analysis was prepared for my presentation at the Global International Astrology Conference in Kuala Lumpur in 2002, and has been revised, updated, and delineated using Vedic methodologies.
Female: July 7, 1929 Time: 3:28 AM Zone: 5:00 DST: 1 Longitude: 73W14 Latitude: 42N27 Lahiri Ayanamsa: 22:52 365.25 Day Year Birth Dasha: Ju/Ve/Sa (6th lord Bhukti, 8th lord MD) Lagna: 24 Taurus 25’
Functional Malefics: Venus, Jupiter, and Mars
Conditions of the Significator’s for Psychiatric Problems: Moon, Mercury, 4th and 5th Houses, Cancer and Leo:
Third lord, Moon, is well placed in the 2nd, benefically conjoining the equal bhava madhya's (EBM's) of the 2nd and aspecting the 8th. Moon is weak through old age, is combust, and is afflicted by malefic Ketu, 76%. Ketu’s affliction to the Moon brings about emotional and mental unrest and misery, while impacting the optimism and initiatives of the native.
Fifth lord Mercury is well placed in the 2nd in its own sign, weakened through infancy 81%, and aspected by weak benefic, 10th lord Saturn. Because of the severity of weakness of Mercury, the native is subject to nervous tension and anxiety, and experiences difficulties with discrimination in both speech and communication. The weakness of the 5th lord and Mercury supports tendencies towards depression and anxiety, because protection and promotion are impaired.
Fourth lord Sun, is well placed in the 2nd house of status and wealth, aspecting the 8th house of wealth and easy gains, and further strengthened by exaltation in Navamsha. This woman is a well-educated, registered nurse with four children. She lives very comfortably, has never experienced financial difficulties, and has been the recipient of long-term inheritances from both her deceased Father’s multiple business and personal assets, and her Mother’s estate settlements.
Dusthana lords, Venus, Jupiter, and Mars are all strong, well-placed in Kendras, and un-afflicted, protecting her sound financial position, financial gains and inheritances from parents, and comforts and luxuries in life.
Her weak, afflicted Moon and weak Mercury, coupled with the 6th and 8th lords both associated with the ascendant, caused tensions and hypochondria, affecting her nervous control capabilities and subsequently hindering her emotional and mental peace, while the 12th lord, Mars, posited in the 4th, contributed to tense situations with respect to losses of peaceful continuity in the living environment. Bouts of anger, restlessness, and separations occurred within the home. This was a result of the adversity she frequently initiated within her own domestic environment, as a result of her way of communicating. Family members feelings were hurt, and communications were often suddenly thwarted.
Ketu in this chart afflicts the EBM’s of the 2nd and 10th by impact of 48%. So although she held a long-term position as head nurse of the pediatric unit of a local hospital, she was also well known by her associates for her harsh speech and emotional outbursts in the workplace.
In the D-5th, Panchamsha, malefic Mars is exalted in the 1st. Moon is posited in the 6th afflicted by Ketu who is posited in the 2nd with Mercury and disposited by Saturn, who conjoins Rahu in the 8th. The Sun remains strong in the 5th. In the D-5th, confirmation of the natal evaluation, with respect to the conditions of her mental and emotional states, are further supported. During the main period of Venus and the sub period of Mars, her status and position were threatened as head nurse of her department because of her frequent and sudden angry outbursts, and her lack of amicable communications.
Note: Diagnosing states of Mental Health can be a lengthy process for Professionals in the medical field, such as Psychiatrists and Psychologists, as many aspects of the behavior criteria, background, and motivational aspects of the patient must be thoroughly evaluated for appropriate medical diagnosis. Often times the psychiatric medical diagnosis is followed by lengthy and diversified experimentation in medication, with the physician searching for the appropriate medicinal prescriptive relief for that particular patient, while minimizing side effects. Often times these prescription intentions are met with unsuccessful results when it comes to finding the magic pill for behavior modification or relief, because mental and emotional states of mind are based on so many internal and external personal experiences, many of which remain a mystery to all but the patient.
Astrologer’s encounter similar experiences and investigations in their search, only we base our evaluation on the horoscope. Every individual horoscope is a woven pattern of unique energy at play, and this energy must be thoroughly synthesized and integrated before a conclusion can be drawn, especially with respect to something as delicate as states of mental health. The prescriptions we recommend are remedial measures with propitiation of the malefics. Although beyond the scope of my presentation, I advise all astrologers to become very familiar with remedials, as often times they become the saving grace for those clients experiencing depression, anxiety, etc.
