Method of Profection and Solar Return Analysis
For those of you unfamiliar with Profections, the directed Profection (annual) rate is equivalent to a direction arc of 30 degrees per year, except Profections move everything at a rate of 30 degrees , or one sign each year, or 2.5 degrees per month. As stated in the index of Solar Fire: "Profection Annual“ an annual rate of 30 degrees, corresponding to a direction of one sign (or house) per year." So start with the Ascending degree representing age 0. One sign ahead moves the ascendant a full 30 degrees and marks the first birthday. Another 30 degrees and you've got the second birthday. The twelfth birthday, and also the 24th, 36th, 48th, etc., is always back to the Ascendant again. This method was apparently very common in ancient times and was also used by medieval astrologers also until it fell out of favor after the Renaissance.
Profection: This is an ancient system of moving the planets and points in the chart, one house per year of life as explained above, and is a technique taken from the Hellenistic Era. Within this system of analysis using Profections to determine and time the area of focus for the year, the chart may be further moved by subdividing the house into smaller units of time. So basically, Profections represent the unfolding of a specific area of life, coming into focus at a certain time of life. It is a "Time Lord" Methodology, based on annual rotation of the Natal Chart, to determine one's yearly focus.
This Methodology description below is preliminary and basic, and something I am currently working on researching...Results to date have been very encouraging, and well worth my time investment. The way I am working with Profections is based on the integration and synthesis referencing the Natal Chart, Transit Chart, Profection Chart, and Solar Return Charts, using Sidereal rather than Tropical Zodiac positions. The Software programs I am primarily working with for ease of calculations are True astrology, Solar Fire Deluxe, Jyotishya Deepika Ultimate Astracadabra, and KPAstro. (Refinements and additions will be made at a later date, and chart examples will follows as time permits. I will share with you my findings as I move further along in my research, as I find Profections to be quite a valuable aid for those interested in Predictive Astrology, o please bear with me as I put together some of the basics.)
Preliminary Guidelines for Analysis
Preliminary notes should be readily available in advance on the running dasas taking place at the time of the Profection and Solar Return assessments, along with the dasa lords natal significations, star and sub lords (both natally and in transit), relationships of star lords to their sub lords, along with noting their cuspal lordships. Aspects of dasha lords to Profection and Solar Return lagna lords and key players, along with noting the new angles of both Profection and Solar Return Charts - and planets placed within – should be given due credence. Part of Fortune, Chiron, and outer planets should not be underestimated in synthesis. (My personal preference for delineation is Sidereal: KP and Placidus House, along with True Nodes). Karakas are always relevant, and it goes without saying we should follow closely the transits of Jupiter, Saturn, and the Nodes.
1. Construct the Profection Chart. (If you are unfamiliar with Profections or need assistance with constructing this chart, please visit Donna’s website fort visuals :)
http://www.sageasita.com/visual-eight.html
http://www.sageasita.com/visual-nine.html
2. Note the House that the Profection Ascendant falls in. This is the area the “spotlight” shines brightly on, and the focus House of activity. If there are two houses involved due to interception, follow through further to research when (the Profection date) that focus will narrow down to one specific house by falling on the cusp, and keep track of activity involving both houses throughout that time frame. Do any planets join the Ascendant?
3. Note the position of the Profection lagna lord…consider this as a sort of Year Lord for the time in question. Note this Profection lagna lord’s position in the Solar Return Chart, along with the Natal chart. What are the areas of influence?
4. Note the influences of the aspects, the new Angular focus of the chart, the Part of Fortune, Chiron, planets in profected lagna and joining profected lagna lord, and profected planetary placements. Note placement of the personal planets (Sun and Moon) relative to new Profected lagna.
5. Now do the same with the Solar Return, following up on where the Solar Return Ascendant falls, its lord, where this lord is profecting (through what house in Profection chart) and repeat all of the above steps.
6. If the Profection chart in closing in on the next birthday (or is closer to the next birthday), consider evaluating both the current Solar Return and the following Solar Return to get a better feel of where the energy is heading. Often times – 3 to 6 months prior to the next Solar Return – the client will feel the effects of the upcoming Solar Return rather than the previous Return. My preference is to calculate using the NEAREST Solar Return Chart. Work with the charts and get a feel for your individual preference.
7. Relocate the Solar Return Chart to the exact place the client is positioned at the time the Solar Return takes place. Check SR aspects to one another, and note the houses that the planets fall in. Pay special attention to the placement of the Sun in the relocated SR Chart from both the relocated SR ascendant and the Profected ascendant, and note the SR aspects to and from the Sun. Also note if SR Sun falls in an angular sign relative to the SR Ascendant, etc.
8. See if the SR planets are well integrated in the SR chart, or if one particular planet seems to be irresponsive with respect to integrating - in some manner - with other planets. (An unaspected Solar Return Planet may not support the way in which matters are being handled with respect to the focus (Profection Chart), so determine if there is a particular planet floundering aimlessly around in the SR chart - with not much direction. If so, often times that planet in the SR will display the negative characteristics of his energy, and even disrupt progress. However, also note this planet’s effects natally (and in transit) prior to determining the effects that are likely to manifest, as counter-indications may either lighten or intensify effects, and the Natal holds the promise.
9. Have a ready reckoner on the status of chart Marakas and the Badhaka for Natal and Solar Return charts if there are concerns, and/or your attention is drawn to matters of health and physical well being.
10. Note in the SR Chart if there is a predominance of planets in a certain element to get a better handle on how one is likely to handle the affairs of the Profection. For example, if the SR has an abundance of planets placed in Water signs, the response may be emotionally based, whereas if the predominance of planets lies in the air signs, the affairs of the Profection may be more rationally based. Do the same with respect to the effects of Moveable, Fixed, and Dual energies (Western being Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable) to determine the years energy when assessing initiative and drive in handling the focus the Profection spotlights and brings forth.
11. Say that the Profection Chart lagna falls in the 10th in Capricorn. You would then closely watch the activity through the 10th and Capricorn along with Saturn’s transits, and the aspects to and from 10th lord Saturn. Saturn being “time lord” of activity becomes highly significant and dominant.
12. Note what planets within a house go to an Angle in the Profection and Solar Return Charts (“angle” meaning from the Profection and Solar Return Ascendant). Planets involved in angular planetary positions often trigger events, which revolve around the nature of the planet posited in the angle.
The additional information given below is based on my ongoing research with respect to integrating the personal points, Sun, Moon, and Lagna, or further detail in delineation in the Profection Chart. This is for your consideration in addition to - and with consideration to the above.
The Profection Sun appears to relate to experiences and opportunities given to us in this particular time frame on our journey through life, and is relative to what areas of interest we will personally be involved with - on a physical level - during this time frame. The placement of the Sun in the Profection Chart shows what areas - ripe for us to experience - have opened up. And as relative to our opportunities, follow through to note the Sun's dispositor, where the Sun's dispositor is located relative to using natal and Profection lagna, and note what that placement can infer with respect to unveiling timely circumstances and experiences. I am also currently researching the Profected Sun as lagna for the time frame - with some telling results...You can test using the Sun as lagna if so inclined - using the same parameters - and follow through with the same criteria as stated in my former sentence, and note (in as many charts as possible) what information is revealed, and its relevance.
The Profection Moon shows our emotional and mental response to our experiences for the time frame we are referencing, and reveals how we are mentally and emotionally reacting to - and internally experiencing - what is happening in our personal environment. Again follow through with disposition and placement of the Moon's dispositor and see what information this additionally reveals to us. The Moon can be very telling, and shows how we emotionally and intellectually respond to the current experiences we are given - or how we internally feel about what is currently happening in our lives. Again, my research is elementary at this point but again is encouraging - so also investigate the Profection Moon as lagna and note planetary placements.
The Profection Lagna - the time lord of activity - shows our actions and activity during this particular time frame, and what influences we deliberately bring to the table based on our individual environment, and based on the opportunities and experiences given to us by the Sun. Look at the lagna to see the period's responses to the opportunities we are presented with, and follow through with the suggestions (above) as relative for the Sun and Moon. For all 3 personal lagna's, do not overlook noting the placement of the dasha and bhukti lords, and see how they may present themselves favorably - or through challenge - to the "opportunities, emotional and mental responses, and activities" as represented by the Profected Sun, Moon, and Lagna respectively. And lastly - don't forget to diligently watch the transits - which often times target with direct aim - revealing the sequence of events as they unfold...
The technique of Profections seems to me to be quite a valuable - but lost or forgotten technique - previously used quite successfully for prediction in another era. The information I have experimented with and given in the above paragraphs has been to me both significant and relevant - however there is a depth necessary to evaluating this grade and type of info - and therefore likely requires an extensive application of mind on the Astrologer's part - coupled with an ability to synthesize and integrate multiple factors simultaneously - and perhaps not necessarily meant for the beginning Student of Astrology. Skills of integration and synthesis while considering multiple factors - along with having an experienced Astrological background on both theory and technique - will assist one in making proper assessments. As always - the skill of the Astrologer is detrimental for predictive success...and none of us is infallible...So although the Profection process and technique is pretty straightforward and simple enough to draw up - intense application of mind is where the challenge lies. My feeling is that the challenge should be looked upon with both excitement and curiosity - but the challenge should never be underestimated...Look long and hard at all factors...
After noting what sign and house the Profected Lagna, Sun and Moon are posited in, take it a bit further now, and check the condition, dignity, placement, etc, of their dispositor's in the Solar Return Chart. The Part of Fortune assessment can additionally be included in all of the above criteria...but be sure to differentiate between day and night births when calculating the Part of Fortune. According to researchers of the ancient astrological texts, the correct method of calculating the Part of Fortune is to use Ascendant + Moon - Sun for daytime births, and Ascendant + Sun - Moon for nighttime births. Also, it will pay to be attentive to all Profected planets that may be crossing Natal angles, and note their significance.

After my growing interest in January/February of 2006 - with respect to investigating further the long lost technique of Profections - both on its own and in combination with Dashas, Solar Returns, Natal and Transit Charts - I was both surprised and delighted to learn from a colleague, a few months after my initial post on my Astrology Research Group, that a wonderful new article had been recently released in April/May 2006 issue of The Mountain Astrologer, entitled Forecasting for the Year: Profections and the Solar Return - by Maria J. Mateus. At that point I renewed my subscription to TMA - which I had let laspe for far too long. So for those with a further interest in Profections - if you have access to TMA, please read this article. Although written and published for the Tropical Zodiac, the article is both enriching and enlightening, as the author brings out some fine points, and it is certainly well worth the read.

Preliminary Guidelines for Analysis
- Natal Chart: This is the promise.
- Profection Chart: The spotlight, or focus of activity being highlighted.; the House activated.
- Solar Return Chart: How we handle the activated house that the Profection Chart has highlighted. Our will or volition for managing these affairs of the Profection.
- Transit Chart: The planetary dances that run interference with these experiences; supporting or challenging the energies at play.
